    Upcoming Checkra1n iOS 16 jailbreak

Checkra1n team is still working on adding iOS 16 (not only iOS 16, iOS 15 & higher versions too)  semi-tethered jailbreak support for Checkra1n. Hence Checkm8 exploit can not be patchable via software update; it must work on every iOS version including iOS 16.

We are all aware of Apple’s signed system volume (SSV) security mechanism introduced with iOS 15. Therefore, a lot of work is required to go through the new security mitigation. The jailbreak experts said checkra1n will be going rootless as a solution sometime back.

On iOS & iPadOS 15, checkra1n could try to use bind mounts instead of union mounts, since union mounts are essentially obsolete and Secure Shell (SSH) access has already been sorted out for latest operating systems.

Rather than going rootless, the checkra1n team would try to get around Apple’s SSV security mechanism by creating a new volume for everything that can’t be bind mounted. Because the root folder would be inaccessible during a jailbreak, this volume would effectively become the new rootFS. Sometimes with iOS 16, there will be another technique that can be found.

    • Checkra1n’s default package manager is Cydia package manager. Support for other packages will be available soon.
