FAQ

Why did Apple allow sideloading?

Because of pressure from the European Union, Apple allowed users to sideload apps on iOS devices.

Apple took legal action against the European Union’s Digital Markets Act regarding Apple to allow app sideloading on its devices. Finally, the EU is making Apple allow app sideloading on its devices, just like they made Apple switch to USB-C on iPhones. Apple has to follow these rules or they could get fined a lot of money, up to 20% of all the money they make worldwide.

So, Apple’s iOS 17.4 update marks the first time the company will open its app store and iOS ecosystem to outside parties. Get more details via Apple announcement.

What are the EU regulations?

The Digital Markets Act is designed to enhance competition by preventing large tech companies like Apple from acting as “gatekeepers” that control the marketplace.

Starting November 1, 2022, the Digital Markets Act (DMA) demands that big companies, known as “gatekeepers,” let others use their platforms. This will impact Apple’s services like the ‌App Store‌, Messages, FaceTime, and Siri. For instance, Apple will have to allow users to get apps from places other than the ‌App Store‌, a process called “sideloading”

What are the other iOS 17.4 Features ?

In addition to permitting alternative app stores and payment systems, Apple is expanding other aspects of the iOS ecosystem in the EU. For the first time, alternative browser engines besides WebKit will be allowed. When users open Safari for the first time on iOS 17.4, they will have the option to choose from alternative browsers to install.

Furthermore, the App Store will now accommodate game streaming services globally, a departure from Apple’s previous restrictions. Additionally, Apple plans to enable developers in the European Economic Area to offer NFC payments in their third-party apps, following an announcement made by the European Commission last week

How does Apple’s sideload work?

Starting from iOS 17.4, Apple is introducing new features that allow developers to distribute their iOS apps through alternative app marketplaces in the EU. This includes providing new APIs and tools that enable developers to offer their apps for download from these alternative platforms.

To sideload apps, start by downloading an “alternative app marketplace” from the marketplace’s website. Once you’ve installed this marketplace app on your device, you can freely browse and install various apps and games available through this platform. However, you can only install third-party app stores that have been approved by Apple. These stores have to follow Apple’s rules, like showing they’ve got enough money, such as having a letter of credit for at least €1 million.

What EU Countries are eligible for sideloading?

The new capabilities will become available to users in the 27 EU countries beginning in March 2024.

Austria, Belgium, Bulgaria, Croatia, Republic of Cyprus, Czech Republic, Denmark, Estonia, Finland, France, Germany, Greece, Hungary, Ireland, Italy, Latvia, Lithuania, Luxembourg, Malta, Netherlands, Poland, Portugal, Romania, Slovakia, Slovenia, Spain and Sweden (According to reports, the UK will be exempt from the changes)

What are The Security Risks?

Apple says that because of the Digital Markets Act (DMA), they’ll have less control over harmful apps in a more open ecosystem. Their anti-tracking feature, App Tracking Transparency, will still work with apps from outside the App Store. But features like Family Purchase Sharing won’t work with those apps.

Most cybersecurity advisors also said that, One of the reasons iPhones are safe is because apps are downloaded from Apple’s secure App Store. Allowing unchecked third parties could let bad actors use Trojan horses and malware in apps to attack devices.

Can sideload apps on my iPhone without jailbreaking?

Yes, The feature to sideload apps onto an iPhone is introduced with iOS 17.4, which is currently in beta and accessible for countries within the EU.

Is this Apple feature same as sideload in Jailbreaking?

Apparently the EU sideloading is misleading. It gives an alternate marketplace but the apps will have to be reviewed by apple and you can’t directly sideload ipa files.

Can access the sideload feature using a VPN for users outside the EU?

If you’re outside the EU and using a VPN, you won’t be able to sideload apps on your iPhone. Before trying to sideload apps, Apple automatically checks various requirements, such as your Apple ID billing address, device location, iOS settings, and device type. iOS uses a system called “countryd” to gather this information and determine whether you can download apps from sources other than the App Store.

Why do you need the Pangu8 sideload marketplace?

Apple’s sideloading feature will not be available to users outside the EU as well as iOS 17.4 below users. But the Pangu8  sideload marketplace can be accessed by worldwide users without limitation. Also all iOS 17 users can access the pangu8  iOS Sideload app marketplace.
